Spam Identification Service

Spam Identification Service

What is SPAM and what can I do to prevent it?

SPAM, also known as unsolicited commercial email or UCE, is bulk email that arrives in your mailbox that you do not want and did not ask for. Atlantech Online's Spam Identification Service will allow you to prevent these unsolicited emails from reaching your inbox. This service will scan each message as it is delivered to your inbox, and process it to see if it appears to be SPAM. Based on its processing rules, the service will then add an additional header field to your email message stating the probability that this message is SPAM. The content of your message is not touched, and therefore is transparent to the user.

If you choose to take advantage of this service, you simply setup several rules either on the email server or in your email software to look at the header added by the Spam Identification Service and process the message based on that. Below, you will find instructions for setting up these rules on Atlantech's webmail server, and also with Outlook 2000 and Netscape Mail 7.x.

If you are using Outlook Express as your mail client, you will not be able to setup the rules described below for Outlook. This is because Outlook Express does not allow filtering based on a mail header field. Instead, you should put the rules on your webmail interface and then the mail will get scanned and deleted before it ever gets to your computer. In this case, and if you are using POP to retrieve your mail, you cannot move the mail to another folder on the server and expect to retrieve that folder with POP, so you should periodically log into webmail and clear out the Spam folder, or simply leave out the rule to move tagged spam.
